Microplastics in Namibian river sediments – a first evaluation

چکیده

Abstract The African continent is rarely the focus of microplastics research, although ubiquity in environment undisputed and still increasing. Due to high production use plastic products partial lack recycling systems many parts continent, it can be assumed that microplastic particles are already present limnic terrestrial ecosystems. Few studies, mainly from South Africa Northern region, show a contamination with microplastics, especially marine environments. This study aims explore presence composition fluvial sediments major catchments Namibia regional on Iishana system Namibia, as one most densely populated areas country. In March 2019 2021, at end rainy seasons, largest river were sampled. Extraction was performed by density separation using Microplastic Sediment Separator (MPSS) solution sodium chloride (density 1.20 g/cm 3 ). particle size determined filtration fractionation, polymer type measurement ATR-FTIR spectroscopy (minimum 0.3 mm). Microplastics found each system, (average 13.2 particles/kg dry weight). perennial, ephemeral rivers, similar concerning size. Polyethylene polypropylene dominant types. Most fractions – 0.5 mm 1.0 mm. fragments films, majority transparent brown.

Investigating abundance and characteristics of microplastics as emerging pollutants in sediments of Taleqan dam and upstream river in Alborz province

Background and Objective: Microplastics (MPs) pollution are considered as a major growing global environmental problem in the past few decades. Dams could be an important reservoir for microplastics accumulation, therefore, in this study the presence of microplastics in sediments of Taleqan Dam and its upstream river was investigated in order to: 1) determine the local status of microplastic po...

Microplastics profile along the Rhine River

Microplastics result from fragmentation of plastic debris or are released to the environment as pre-production pellets or components of consumer and industrial products. In the oceans, they contribute to the 'great garbage patches'. They are ingested by many organisms, from protozoa to baleen whales, and pose a threat to the aquatic fauna. Although as much as 80% of marine debris originates fro...

Dense populations of a giant sulfur bacterium in Namibian shelf sediments.

A previously unknown giant sulfur bacterium is abundant in sediments underlying the oxygen minimum zone of the Benguela Current upwelling system. The bacterium has a spherical cell that exceeds by up to 100-fold the biovolume of the largest known prokaryotes. On the basis of 16S ribosomal DNA sequence data, these bacteria are closely related to the marine filamentous sulfur bacteria Thioploca, ...

Microplastic pollution in St. Lawrence River sediments

Although widely detected in marine ecosystems, microplastic pollution has only recently been documented in freshwater environments, almost exclusively in surface waters. Here, we report microplastics (polyethylene microbeads, 0.40– 2.16 mm diameter) in the sediments of the St. Lawrence River. We sampled 10 freshwater sites along a 320 km section from Lake St. Francis to Québec City by passing s...

Analysis of river sediments in the paleo- Meyghan basin

Introduction The territory of central Iran is now affected by the hot and dry climate. But, several evidences, such as the extreme erosion of running waters, huge alluvial fans, wide alluvial terraces, and flood deposits indicate colder and wetter climate in the territory (Ghahroodi Tali, 2011: 3). The rivers belong to the most important parts of the sedimentary basin. In fact, the rivers are...
